MargaretHICKSMargaret Hazel Hicks passed away peacefully on 15th May 2026 following a long and courageous battle with leukaemia.
Born in Essex in 1939, Margaret was the second of 4 siblings (Lesley, Margaret, Terry and Betty) and spent her early years as an evacuee during the war.
As a young woman, Margaret began her career in the City of London before marrying her beloved husband, James William Hicks, on 11th July 1959. Together they built a happy family life in Surrey, raising their two sons, David and Robert initially in Effingham, then Fairlands, and finally in Merrow, Guildford, where Margaret lived for over 35 years and became one of the village's longest-serving residents. She was well known, respected, and greatly valued within the local community.
A determined, pioneering and at times challenging woman, Margaret achieved many firsts throughout her life. She gained professional qualifications at a time when this was far less common for women, she founded Guildford's first Girls' Nautical Training Corps, she became the first member of her family to own her own home, and developed a successful talent for buying, improving, and selling many properties.
Following the sudden loss of James, Margaret was fortunate to meet William (Bill) Davies at an organ recital in Bristol in 2003. Together they enjoyed 23 happy years filled with companionship, friendship, and love.
Margaret will be deeply missed by Bill, her surviving brother Terry, her sons David and Robert, her grandchildren Thomas, Amelia, and Theo, and great-grandchildren Nola and Albie.
Her funeral service will take place at St John's Church, Merrow, on Thursday 18th June 2026 at 11.30am. Family flowers only. Donations or enquiries may be directed to James & Thomas Funeral Directors, Merrow.
